I was searching through several of my favorite cooking blogs and noticed that almost all of them centered on the newest recipes or the latest cooking trend. This is great and I love to try new things, but I began to wonder with all these trends and techniques can the equipment being used make a difference with the success of the recipe. So I began to look at a commonly used material in the kitchen. Stainless steel is the first material that came to mind. I found a couple of interesting facts that may help when choosing cookware for your kitchen. Stainless steel is an alloy that starts with basic iron with up to 8 alloys added, depending on the quality. The major alloys in stainless steel are chromium and nickel. The chromium provides rust and corrosion resistance and durability. Nickel provides additional rust resistance, hardness, and high polishing characteristics. Low end stainless steel cookware, mixing bowls, stockpots and accessories are usually not highly polished, and could be subject to some rust spotting. There are a few advantages to purchasing stainless steel it is extremely durable, non porous, extremely hard, smooth surface, easy to clean, dent and scratch resistant. With everyone’s extremely busy schedule the easy maintenance is why stainless steel is such a popular choice.
